Creating a theme for 2019 — As 2018 draws to a close, many of us find ourselves thinking about what we want to change in the new year. We may have visions of hope, new goals for our lives, or relationships to repair. It is a time when we reflect on the year that we are leaving, embracing the positive aspects of it and reviewing the challenges we met and conquered. Whatever occurred for each of us is unique and special. Many of the things we remember about 2018 might be satisfying to contemplate, while others may be decisions or actions we regret. Twelve months have passed and with good fortune, twelve more are coming—new opportunities to use what we learned about ourselves and other people.
Find a quiet place to pause from the hustle and bustle of the time to savor the positive moments of last year. Think about your triumphs during 2018. Be quiet and allow yourself to concentrate on only your voice. Maybe you can pat yourself on the back for a job well done and accept your amazing accomplishments. It has been a challenging time for many of us, and just surviving the ups and downs of 2018 is a pretty big deal!
If you lament on things that didn’t work out so well, use this time to reflect on those events, but try not to judge yourself too harshly. None of us is perfect, and hindsight wasn’t available to you when you had to face those situations. You might want to ask yourself what didn’t go as well as you expected. Do you understand why? Are there useful skills or knowledge you can use to face similar events in 2019?
What changes can you make in 2019? Where do you want to be at this time next year? Try to focus on things you can actually achieve or control. Realistic goals broken down into small, achievable steps can create amazing shifts in perspective, relationships, and self-image!
What theme would you use to describe the fading year and what theme would you like to have in 2019? Thinking about a theme can put a visual spin on your thoughts. It’s like putting up a banner in your foyer to celebrate a milestone. Seeing is another way of processing and creating, so make your own “theme park” for 2019. While doing so, be supportive of yourself. You are great, and it is time to own it. Create a personal statement and post it in a calendar or on your desktop where it can be seen.
Use ideas like these: I am…………..I can……..and I will.
Here is mine:
“I am thankful for the days that I have made many people smile with my therapy dog, and I intend to continue bringing joy and smiles in 2019.”
I hope you also have the opportunity to share your joy with others in 2019 and to use your knowledge and interests to enrich your ties to friends, family, and community. May we all enjoy peace, prosperity, health, and love in the new year. Let’s create a special 2019.
